Exploration

In this project, I explored how the YouTube app could allow users to share videos with custom starting points

Tools used: Illustrator, After Effects, Sketch, Procreate (illustrations)

Design, by way of soccer videos
While watching soccer highlights one day on the YouTube app, I caught some amazing plays and decided to share them with a friend.
To make it easy for him, I scrubbed through the video and wrote down the time codes (minutes + seconds) for each key moment.

Stumbling upon an unmet need
I ended up sending my friend two texts – one with the URL, and the other with time codes to jump to – which felt clunky.
He pointed out how the desktop site lets you share videos with custom in-points.
With so much media consumption happening on our phones, I wondered: Why doesn't this feature exist in the iOS app?

Getting down to business
That was all the impetus I needed to dust off my motion graphics chops and figure out what such a mobile experience might look like.
My guiding principles
1. Follow mobile-centric interaction paradigms
2. Fit naturally into the existing app's content-sharing flow.
The results of my experiment are below – thanks for taking a look!
